Woolwich Common is a vibrant, diverse and changing ward which fans out from Woolwich town centre (including the new Tesco and Woolwich Centre), up to Queen Elizabeth Hospital and Plumstead Common, south of Plumstead Common Road. All of the ward is in the SE18 postcode area. Its distinct neighbourhoods and estates include Barnfield, the Woolwich Common estate, Connaught (now being transformed), Buttmarsh/Ruddstreet, Walpole, Armstrong, Long Walk, the Academy, Woolwich Central and the street residential areas of Plumstead Common, Herbert/Eglinton and central Woolwich around Sandy Hill. Almost half of the ward comprises the ancient Woolwich Common and its surrounding conservation area, including many army houses. The military heritage is strong with the now converted Academy and the Royal Artillery, the longest frontage in Europe after the Hermitage.
WC is a Commonwealth in one ward with people from all corners of the world underpinned by strong community activity and engagement. There are severe challenges with the level of poverty, poor housing and rogue landlords, but great opportunities with the continuing transformation of the town centre, the arrival of Crossrail and rising school standards. WC Labour Party is at the heart of and representative of our communities, with an active social and campaign programme. Meeting monthly on the 2nd Wednesday at St Peter’s Church opposite Tesco, everyone is welcome.
