Woolwich is back on Crossrail map
Crossrail—the new east-west rail line linking Heathrow Airport with Kent and Essex—will now be stopping at Woolwich following a successful Labour campaign. The new line was planned to go in a tunnel under Woolwich without stopping here. But a Woolwich station has been put back into the Crossrail Bill that has now gone through
parliament. A Crossrail station could now be opening on the Royal Arsenal site by 2016, with trains to Canary Wharf taking just eight minutes. The new
Docklands Light Railway station in Woolwich is even more advanced, with construction in full swing and the new link to the Royal Docks due to open in January 2009.Elsewhere in Woolwich, construction of the new service centre and library on Wellington Street is about to start, and the new Brookhill Children’s Centre on the Connaught estate
opened in June.
